Default putting on my flowmasters and tips, say it aint so

I was told by a local shop (said they do custom work) that they would need to hack the left side of my exhaust (or was it the right) to allow for a bend into the muffler and also they wanted to spread my mufflers open to weld the tips in (hell no). Now,I have seen decent exhaust guys plenty of times weld parts straight on and I was not about to let someone do this. The mufflers I bought are super 44s #942446 and the tips I found on Ebay (sweet deal too). They also tried to say the exhaust wasn't 3.25 on one side?!! So anyone else run into this? I am already looking through my cruise news for a better place around Detroit (north west side).


I tossed in a couple photos, hope you like but don't really care if you don't.

after the y, before the mufflers was 2" on mine. This forum is very misleading on that.

Not the same thing, but I did have some issues putting flowmasters on my SS. There is not much room to make the bends and attach tips. IMO this is why the stock tips are so short. Since I don't care about tips I just had the pipes bent to come out in the right place. I can testify it is not easy to fit it all in. I watched the guy do it.

Though this guy could weld right to the end of the muffler - not sure why your guy wants to open up the muffler? He may want to cut the inlet off and weld right to the muffler to gain a little space.

He wants to spread the piping to make the fit better to the tips. It makes the weld easier and much cleaner. It is also a very very common practice.

He is wanting to Expand the metal so the tip will slide inside the outlet of the muffler. Generally you would want to expand the next piece in line so there is leas chance of an exhaust leak, in this case it would be the tip. But if there is not enought material and the pipe on the tip is too short it may be the only option here. It sounds like he knows what he is doing, but may not be explaining it in a way that makes sense to you.

By the way I didn't know they made GXP's in 2004?? Is that right??

stock exhaust is 2.5 before the Y and 2.25 after on my 08 Impala

pontiac had came out with the bonnevile before the grand prix. in 04 . it was a V8 but 4.6 not 5.3 ..my friend has one and has alot of trouble with the aftermarket parts for it.

and about the mandrel bends im pretty sure if you have a stock exhaust.its 2.50 to the Y and 2.25 back.

Thanks for all the input and I dunno why I put 04, I will fix that asap. It's an 06. I was told about a few places that sound a little better to go to locally.
