Exclamation Oil leak under boost

Ok guys...got her all buttoned up for the most part. Still having some lil tune bugs and stuff, we went and made a custom virtual VE tabel for her, and let me tell ya...she runs great...right now we had to put a new O2 upstream cause OE was bad...so running around in open loop right now on the virtual VE table...lol..we will close the loop again and ref the MAF again in combo with the VE table we made once i get back to my tuner.

But, we have our crankcase vent kit hooked up and working...was getting really bad oil blow off or venting up top until I got rid of those plastic tab connectors for the intake elbow and manifold...I went straight on them with sily hose and clamps...no blow off or venting of oil now up top...BUT

We were doing some passes the other night getting some more tuning in, and i started to smell oil like i did before when we would loose it up top after a boost run...well, as i looked around and in front and behind the car, the place we pulled off to the test road, there were lil smiley faces..LOL, oil puddles...quite a bit...and there were like 3 of them(dam near one for everytime we stopped and parked under a light)...and of course one underneath the car when we backed up from where we were...

Got to looking...hard to tell, but I do know that I had a small pan leak from the factory when i bought her with 29k on her...it had a stain on the subframe and all from it...it would show its ugly face by beading off a few select oil pan bolts, but it would never show on the road underneath the car...

Well...it was showing this night and started to collect more than normal when we started to boost at the smallest psi...and now, funny thing is..its not there now...only like it was from factory before...we cleaned it up off the belly and now it doenst even show under the car...

My/Our Thoughts: That the original pan gasket was leaking already and we just boost it and the oil vents out of the gasket leak while boosting...

Explanation LOL...: Im so technical..and it will go back to where it was when we are done...and all the oil we see is simply from it BLOWING all over the underbody and pan making mess, and we go to park, the gasket goes back to where it needs to be, only the lil leak it had originally, and we just leak all the blown oil that is built up under the car and the pan etc...its a mess...
so its not leaking at that rate parked...just boosting..and all the oil when parked is from the blown oil on the bottom..just leaks off subframe what is there from the boost run...

I seen the TSB for the rear main thread...but IDK if thats for my 08 or not..im going to check with the dealer tomarrow...ill see..i also see that im not the only one with a pan gasket issue...

So chime in..lets see whats up here...thanks for the help guys...

PS...this thing pulls like a frieght train...when we arent dropping oil LOL

Did you put a decent PCV valve on it?
I was having some issues with oil leaks to. I had a tiny breather filter on the front valve cover that couldn’t keep up with blow by under boost, and would pressurize the crankcase. I ditched the small 1 and got an oil filler filter. No more issues.
They sell LS1 oil cap filters but I got some circle track breathers from a company on EBay.

Yeah, sounds like you are getting blow-by past the oil rings. Once that starts, it is a crapshoot if it will stop. Get some ventilation on the valve covers and see if that helps.

Same thing here. I ended up going with the big valve cover breather on the front side where the oil filler would normally go. I still get some oil under boost out of it.

I really don't think it's your rear main seal. To do the oil pan gasket you will need to support the motor up top with a cherry picker and lower the sub frame a few inches to get the oil pan out. It's not a fun job and I have done it a few times.

hey, thanks alot guys!! you have no idea how good it feels to know that im not alone and this isnt so abnormal..lol...

and just a tid bit..idk for sure...but i was at one of our dealers here in indy...ya know, the one in every town that has the "guy" that looks over stuff etc...lol. but anyways..he pulled up the TSB stuff..i was just curious on it...they wont touch it anyway with TSB stuff unless its still in warranty..but yeah, the guy told me that the service manual for GM does not require you to drop the subframe...and the job was at like 3hrs...??? so idk supercat...

I was lookn at some PCV stuff on tech here too...and i think im going to run a catch can guys...just straight through...get rid of the crap and mess...and refrence vacuum of it off my intake on my turbo...at the filter...and run the two valve covers to a T into one can inlet and the vacuum to the other....ill keep ya posted
Thanks again!!!

Let us know what you do with the catch can. I've done the oil pan about four times now and really there is no way to get it out without dropping the subframe a few inches and raising up the motor. I know on v6's you can do it, but the v8 pan from what I've done doesn't allow for it.

Also once you start getting excessive blow by out the breather and a good amount of oil, you have more than likely cracked a ring land.

See, as of right now im not getting in "blow by" in a breather cause i dont have one...i have a STS PCV switch kit....its a tiny breather basically in line with a valve/sylenoid that actuates upon recieving 1psi of positive pressure triggered by a 1psi switch...im getting a lil oil in the element...which is only like 1"x1"x.50"...but its not working as well as it should....not venting enough...I have a check valve in the top side mani refrence before the valve cover port...then my front valve cover is refrenced directly to the other side of the PCV switch/sylenoid so when it opens, it is fed into this little breather element...and my positive press for the 1psi switch is refrenced at my intake elbow on a nipple on top before the TB.

Whats funny, is that ive been moderatley been boosting 4-6psi around town, nice an gradual accel...and no oil like we had the other night...but that was full boost and WOT...so prob a big diffrence....
