Default Tuner?

Is a tuner worth it for performance gains? Are the suggested gains realistic....They seem kinda pricey. If so what tuner would you guys recommend for 2006 Impala SS.

do you have any other mods? alone a tuner or tune will help a little depending on your engine conditions, location..etc but with other mods is where you will gain the most with a tune..

are you thinking about buying a handheld tuner? hp tuner software? or getting it tuned by a professional?

i was just thinking about a handheld tuner. i dont know what other mod's i could do without throwing any codes/voiding warranty that would increase performance. They aren't any professional tuners locally in my area so it makes it difficult.

A hand held tuner will net you decent gains but the least of the bunch. If you buy the Diablo tuner i think there is a member on here that you can down load a good tune from, just can't remember the name.. You could also look into vector peformance and get a "box tune" where you tell them what you have done to the car and they will either tune you a new ecm or you send them yours, they program it and then send it back..

As for other mods i think you can get away with a 3"downpipe and highflow cat with out voiding anything.. So far the downpipe will give you the most gains for the money.

It will void your inspection if you live in an area where they do emission testing

I have a Superchips Cortex and have no mods done yet, I am putting my knn and dp in today or the weekend. Without any mods done I have found a noticeable difference in power just from the Cortex tune. I loaded it with the 91 octane, if you use regular gas you'll get pinging. I also called a local tuning place which charges 450 for a dyno tune and when I asked about estimated gains he said you will usually get 20hp and 20tq from him tuning it but that varies on the vehicle itself, could be more or less. I don't know the differences between the Superchips and the Diablo but I'm sure they do the same thing. Correct me if I am wrong on that.

Ya i think the downpipe will mess with emissions around here. So ill probably try one of those tuners. Probably Super Cortex, you just used the default tune it came with and you noticed sugnificant gains

go with the Diablosport tuner if you want a hand held it has more tunning options then the superchips.. but if you just want to plug it in and answer a couple question and not really go into the tuning then the superchips is the one

get the diablosport predator, or the trinity... both work for your car...

and I've had both for my car well, i do still have my trinity, heh...

marylandspeed.com has a good deal on the predator now.. 325 and it comes with the interface kit (usb/serial cable and power adapter) which you'll need any way to export recorded data logs to your pc for analyzing, to import/export tune files for when the time comes and you want a custom tune from a diablosport CMR custom tuner (like myself), etc etc...

PLUS, they're also giving free shipping on it.

you need the u7191 model predator:

plus, there are a bunch of write-ups and help available on diablo's predator gm forum:

The only drawback with the Diablo is lack of transmission support - but you can get a cuttom tune for the engine. I'm happy with my Cortex, but will be getting a dyno tune sometime soon.

No offense, but every time someone mentions the Cortex you advertise your Diablo products which is very understandable, but being that it's 2010 and a lot of people asking these questions have cars newer than 06 shouldn't you mention that it doesn't work on the 07's and newer or am I mistaken? If I'm wrong I apologize. I recently purchased an 07 SS and am looking at getting a hand held tuner and the Diable definitely looks appealing, but according to the website it wouldn't work for me.

the OP who was asking the question, has a 2006, which IS supported... I was replying to his post/question... and the diablo predator and trinity will both work for his 2006 Impala SS...

if it was a 2007+, I wouldn't have mentioned anything at all - because you are correct - the 2007, 2008 are not supported...

AND, I mention the diablo products because it offers a LOT more adjustability than any other handhelds out there, AND the ability to have custom tunes created for it. You are very limited when it comes to the other ones.
