Default code issues/ overheating issues

i have a code that comes up p0442 it says its pending and i dont know what it is or how to fix it. Also here lately the temp gauge on my dash goes real high then the screen says a/c off engine protection. can anyone help

the code is for an leak in the evaporative system. You can try a new gas cap, but there seems to be a common occurance where a valve fails and needs to be replaced. Do a quick search on the forum, I am sure it will pop up. As to the overheating, could be a few things. If it overheats while you are stopped, look at the fan and fan relays, if it happens while you are moving, could be a clogged radiator, something blocking the fins (think plastic bag stuck to it), if it is both, t-stat. Step one would be to verify you are not low on coolant.

the coolant is not low i checked that first when it happened. it happens while sitting and drivin while im behind a car but if no one is in front of me it seems to be fine. as for the code i might need to replace a valve?

When you say your coolant is not low, have you checked at the water pump or just the overflow/reservoir? I still had coolant in the reservoir when my water pump slowly pissed it all away, giving me the same messages you got on the DIC.
