Default Torque Converter or New Trans?

Well, I have finally experienced first hand the problems people have had with these transmissions.

My Impy has 49k on it and at 65mph when I try to accelerate the RPMs drop off about 1-2 hundred then jump back up 500.

Under warranty, do I get the converter replaced or wait for the thing to stop moving?

I'd go in to at least have them look at it.

Take it in NOW.

Our Impala exhibited that exact behavior. We took it in and they found material in the pan, which was from the converter. It had begun to take out the clutches in the trans. We got it in before it left us stranded. They rebuilt the trans completely and installed a new converter.

Chances are, you already need a new trans and converter.

EDIT: Be sure to uninstall your tune, CAI, and TBS. Make sure you're COMPLETELY stock or the dealer could claim your mods caused it.

I don't plan on taking it to a dealer. My warranty covers repairs at any local shop with a state inspection license. If there was a dealer in the Philly area that had a reputable service facility I'd take it there. Last time I took it to the dealer for the powersteering line recall, half my car was left unassembled.

I have a friend who owns a shop a block from my house, the only person I will let touch my car. I'm gonna push for a new transmission. Hopefully the warranty company doesn't send anyone out to look at the car!

That other car was an 08. On 2007 and up, they can tell that a PCM has been reflashed, but not on an 06 like the op has.

Right, but it's still better to de-mod, as pretty much all aftermarket warranties have the same clause where they refuse a repair if the drivetrain has been modded.

Better to avoid any hassles in the first place.

I always pulled the tune, better safe than sorry.

Luck you can avoid the dealer, I also had problems with the power steering recall.

No matter what year the car is, you should pull the tune and go back to stock, as the dealer can tell if you CURRENTLY have a modified program installed.

The difference is, on 2006 Impalas and Monte Carlos (and 05-06 GP GXPs), the dealer can't tell if the PCM was previously reflashed. On 2007 and up, the PCM keeps a record of previous reflashes, which the dealer tech can pull. The only place to get a "legal" flash is a dealer, which would be part of the car's service record. If the PCM shows a flash that's not on the record, then that's how they would nail you.
