Default Oil Pressure Gauge...

Ok, I have never really found a thread anywhere on whether or not a aftermarket gauge can be installed or not. Now, I have an aftermarket one. I tried to splice into the OEM sender but cannot get a correct reading. Now the OEM sender has a 5v reference stud in the connector and a stud for the reading to the computer. Now, do you think its possible i'm not getting a correct reading because the aftermarket one has to run off of 12v and the OEM sender on has a 5v reference. Or am I going to have to install the aftermarket sender? There is clearance for the aftermarket sender, but the threading is different. Has anyone had to buy any adapters to make this work? Can I run the pressure sender somewhere else on the block instead of where the OEM sender is? I don't know what to do!

Tap for a mechanical gauge at the oil filter.

Is that the only way we can add one to these cars? I really don't want a floorboard full of oil.

You could add something like a dashhawk to monitor oil pressure

I am thinking on one of these. The install is a breeze too. It IS plug - n - play.

I have an Auto Meter that I recently replaced with an Aero Force gauge. It's used but complete including new tubing. It still looks brand new. There's a picture of it in my garage. I'll let you have it for $40 shipped.

I have one of those now. Rossko turned me on to them. It's great! If I had known about them last year, I would have bought a pair of them instead of individual gauges. I say go for it!

I added an Autometer Full Sweep ES digital gauge to my Impala. It's a pain to add the second sender unit. I must have bought almost every type of adapter, but I finally got it! I did this some years ago and posted it at NAIOA.

Here's a link to it with pictures and a diagram of the parts used. I googled some online places to get the adapters. The rest I got at Pep-Boys.

The diagram is on page 2 of the post. Let me know if you need any other info.

Below are the pics:

You could go electronic or mechanical from that point- I usually use electronic, as I also don't care for oil inside the passenger compartment.

The reason I'm posting is that unless the extra height is needed, you can accomplish the same thing in the diagram with fewer fittings by a little shopping at Discount Hydraulic Hose:
Starting at the M16x1.5 to 1/8 bushing (this is an Autometer adapter, or you can buy a 16mmx1.5 plug and drill & tap it for 1/8 pipe)
1/8 pipe tee with one male and 2 female:
33750-02-02-02 | 1/8" NPTF Female Pipe x 1/8" NPTF Male Pipe Run Tee (Brass) $1.78

The Autometer sender screws into the top as shown, and on the other outlet:
33200-06-02 | 3/8" NPTF Female x 1/8" NPTF Male (Brass) $1.30
Note that as shown in the diagram this does not appear to be the correct thread size for a 16mmx1.5 sender, 3/8 NPTF is 0.675 in (17.15 mm) x 18 thread. To tap a 16mmx.15 thread, you'd use a 14mm bit (16-1.5=14), so you're starting with a .544" hole.

I didn't find a 16mmx1.5 to 1/8 NPTF adapter, so this would be done in 2 steps with a 16mm female x 1/4 male pipe and 1/4 female to 1/8 male pipe bushing:
9235-16-04 | M16x1.5 Male Metric x 1/4" Female NPTF (Steel) $11.08
33200-04-02 | 1/4" NPTF Female x 1/8" NPTF Male (Brass) $0.68

I've used Discount Hydraulic Hose on most of my conversions. They are very reasonably priced (although there may be like a $20 minimum) and don't kill you for shipping- for small fittings, use Priority Mail flat rate at checkout.
