Default Plugs from DOD Cylinders

Well my MPG's have been going down the tubes to I decided to change the plugs and wires today, only got halfway done but here is what i found so far.

Im surprised the damn things still fired, and glad I didn't wait until 100kmi when they're "supposed" to be changed. I'll finish up the rest tomorrow but I'm guessing I'll find 2 more nasty looking plugs.

Wow, I should probably check/change mine. How is changing the plugs? I've had a LS1 Z28 and a 96 Monte Carlo V6 for comparison.

Well, the fronts were fine, but the backs will be a chore. I'll be taking off the STB, unsecure some wire looms, and the coil packs to make room,. I'll post back after I'm done to let you know.

All done now. Taking off the coil packs made the rears MUCH easier and it wasnt as bad as I thought. Having a pair of long handle pliers with a 45 deg bend in the jaws was perfect for getting the old boots off. Took me about 2 hours to do start to finish and here are all the plugs. The rears weren't as bad as the fronts but still crappy.

hmmm....i guess them not firing some of the time causes the build up. what are your mods and do you have a tune?

All I have is a Magnaflow cat-back and just got a tune last week. MPG's were an issue well before the tune too, so its been pretty much stock for all of its 62kmi. Oh and I think the DOD cylinders are the only ones where the oil builds up and here's why. I took a 1 hour drive and cruising along DOD was on for almost 10 min until I sped up and I saw a plume of blue smoke in my rear-view when DOD went off as I accelerated. It did this again as I was going along for a while, slowed down for a light and the light went green so I hit the gas and same thing.

Reading this makes me glad that I tuned DoD out at 25k. Something about uneven engine wear always concerned me... Good job!

Good ol' #7 plug!!!! That thing looks like you set it on fire and then threw it in the mud to put it out!!!

Make sure all your boots are still ok too. When my buddy installed my headers and lifters he took out the plugs too and one of the boots stayed connected to the plug while the rubber and wire broke off. The wire was all corroded. Made my car idle/run 10000x's better!

Been driving it around a bunch today and it idles soooooo much smoother and feels better on acceleration too. Guess I'll be checking these more often.

You'd be surprised by how often some of the LS4s need new plugs/wires. It took me 6mo after I bought the car to put new wires on (did a full tune-up when I got it but cheaper out and skipped wires thinking they were fine since they are so short). Well there was always what felt like a tiny misfire that DROVE ME CRAZY until spring. Sure as **** that absolutely made the car run 10x smoother. Then I got a tune later on, so I should probably throw new plugs and wires at it again. Feels like it's starting to do the same thing. I will get the good wires this time though so they stop crappin out. I'm currently running the diamond fire plugs. Despite split reviews, I love them. They have made several of my cars run even smoother than usual. That's my $0.02.

Nah not a lot, well it varies. Last 3kmi I went through 1qt, and sometimes I'll go through 1qt in 1500mi. Seems to depend on DOD, more its active, more I use. I've been doing a lot of city driving so DOD hasn't kicked in much.
