Sucks, man...I'm really sorry to hear this.

Yeah, they're just as bad as the original stock tranny. I've been warning people about this for the last 3 years. TEP is the only way to go if you don't want to have this problem again.

If you're were getting a TH-350 rebuilt, I'd say no problem. I know someone over on GMLS4 talked to Jasper about getting a 4T65-HD rebuilt and they claimed to have seen schematics indicating that they supposedly do the same thing Dave does at TEP. Frankly, I don't buy it. If you saw the specialized machine work that Dave puts into his valve bodies, you'd know there's no way Jasper would take the time to do that on a low-volume rebuild.

Do yourself a favor:

Don't dick around with Jasper.
Don't dick around with a GM CERTA
Don't even bother with a rebuild from Joe-Blow from Idaho.

Contact Dave @ TEP, tell him what's happened and work out the details. His street/strip trans costs about the same price as a GM or brand x rebuild, so there's no reason (other than turnaround time) why would go anywhere else. And I have 120,000 miles on a TEP tranny in my Impala to prove that his stuff lasts.

I pulled apart a GM Certa trans a few weeks ago to build for my Turbo GXP - was not impressed with the build quality. Shame to say cause I'm a GM fan, but it was done poorly. I've not seen a TEP trans, but Dave certainly has a good reputation - shame it's such a long wait.

So on your previous rebuild - did you use a stock converter ?? They're a main source of problems with a stock trans...

It's actually not the converter itself, but the pressure relief valve that bleeds off the excess pressure that is killing converters. A Sonnax replacement, which is about a $5.00 part, will prevent the issue altogether.

The "new" style woven converter clutch material that is stock in our trans converter breaks down alot faster than the older hard clutch style. That's why there is a bulletin for using extra and bigger magnets, and why pressure control & shift solenoids fail from being clogged with metal shavings...

You are correct in that the relief valve is another issue that contributes to the problem and is easily addressed during a rebuild/ performance build.

The reason I brought it up was to make sure someone put it out there that the stock converter is crap... your better off getting one for a Series 2 3800SC 4t65 or getting a custom stall with the old style converter clutch. IMHO, the worst thing you could do is reuse a stock converter with a rebuild...

How long is the wait? Just wondering I plan on getting TEP to do my trans when it goes....

Agreed on the converter. I'm sure they'll find plenty of TCC material when his trans is torn down.

I guess its good I installed that remote trans filter and bumped my tcc min max values up in my tune. I almost at 90k with no issues yet although I'm sure it'll bite the dust sooner or later

Sorry to hear about your trans.

I have no idea why this is not a sticky?

Once the TEP upgrades are done the 4T65 HD is a stout transmision.

Funny. I traded in my 07 SS for a 11 WRX a while ago. Had the tranny issues. Then had to replace all the lifters (not sure why)

even if you dont go with a full built tep transmission you might want to at least get some parts from him. i think he has a kit now he sells so you can have a local shop rebuilt it
