Default GXP Brakes

Hey guys,

Can anyone point me in the direction of a guide to changing the pads and rotors?

I've never done brakes on a vehicle but I wanna learn so I can save some money on labour.

Also, what's the best place to buy OEM brakes?

So I took your advice... and I think I can now do the replacing of pads and rotors myself lol. Only question I have is... I went to 1AAuto to get the pads and rotors since they look just like OEM ones, and the ceramics aren't very expensive, but one thing I noticed was for the rear discs, they are showing cross drilled...whereas on my GXP they're solid?

I did buy the car used so can anyone tell me if the rears are supposed to be cross drilled and the dealership I bought it from just cheaped out?

They came from the factory drilled so someone put some cheap rotors on the back.

Dammit. I hate when people cheap out like that.

Anyway, when I was having struts checked the shop only mentioned I needed rear brakes but didn't say anything about the front since they weren't looking around up there. However, how do I tell if I do in fact need front brakes as well? Like is there a rule of thumb to go by for the pads and rotors?

I haven't had any squeaking from the front really that I can tell... Only the back brakes when I reverse in wet/cold weather they scream lol

Edit: I read something about measuring the rotors with a caliper or micrometer??

don't worry about the rears. 90% of your breaking is from the fronts.

Alright.

But just for future reference, how does one tell if the rotors need changing?

And when you guys are changing pads do you keep those little metal clips or shims on? What exactly are they there for?
