Default Oil Pump

Has anyone here replaced their oil pump on a 5.3 impala or monte? I may need to replace mine and am looking for some tips. Looks like I might have to start at the tail lights and work my way forward. Hopefully someone has found a way that won't take 2 months to change it. I need to get my pan off to see whats going on. Thanks in advance for any assistance.

What happened first was 313,000 miles, then ticking lifters at idle, then the "oil pressure low, stop your engine message".

I'm sure you've already done this but have you checked/replaced the OPSU? Is there metal shavings in your oil?

And replace the last chance filter under the Oil Pressure sending unit as well if you have not.

Yes, I have replaced the sending unit and no, there are no shavings in my oil. I have also replaced the last chance filter (it was stained but not clogged by any means). Since my lifters tick at idle and stop when the engine revs and then tick again back at idle, my pressure does seem truly low. I need to entertain removing the oil pan and check whats going on......clogged screen?, broken suction line?, bad pressure relief?? Somethings going on and I don't think its anything that I can diagnose on the outside of the motor.

Well at the mileage you have i'm sure it have been taken care of. I doubt the motor has sludge but try running some Gunk or similar engine flush product to see if it helps . What weight motor oil are you running?

I have ran some seafoam through it but it didn't seem to help. Maybe I should cut open my filter and see if I have any sludge in it?? Running 5w30 and has always been synthetic after the first oil change. I let it break in on petroleum base. I'm not sure what I will do, I just saw a print of the oil pump and its location. My goodness, I don't think they could have put it in a worse spot unless they put it between the trans and the rear block. Looks like everything on the front has to come off.

I can tell you right now, if youve been running the car with low or no oil pressure, enough to make it tick, just be prepared to put a new engine in or rebuild it.

The sludge could be in the pick up screen, although unlikely with synthetic from the start. A motor flush wont hurt, and stepping up to a thicker oil may help as well. Nothing is really great to work on for these cars, putting a v8 with a front drive make for a tight fit and heat soak. 300k is great to get from a performance car , consider it a good run if it needs to be replaced at that point.

jealousy will get you no where....lol

Maybe I used slick 50 and can run it without oil......I didn't. Pressure seems low, not non existent. I'm living on the edge.......

Lucas also makes a good oil stabilizer in synthetic, might help prolong it. Google it lots of videos on that.

Well, finally got a VDO mechanical gauge and checked my pressure. Pressure is significantly low at idle and great at higher RPM's. About 7psi @ 600 RPM, 11psi @ 750 RPM, 40psi @ 1000 RPM and 40+ at higher RPM's. I thought I saw the pressures on a search one time but can't find them now. Anybody know what the pressures should be? Thanks.

Was there a code for the low oil pressure, it would help me finding the criteria that sets it

The code is set when it is 7 psi off of its predicted oil pressure.

I'm not getting a code and the DOD is working normal. Just get the message sometimes at idle, "stop the engine - low oil pressure". I am not aware of a code. I rev the engine a little and the message disappears but nothing on the dash that leads me to believe that there was a code set.

(A few years ago, the sensor quit working right and the DOD would not come out of 8 cylinder mode but changing the sensor fixed that.)

What about below 1000 RPM's, any idea what that should be because at 1000 RPM I have more than 24 PSI.

I think my engine idles low sometimes also, that could be part of it. Sometimes 600 sometimes 750. What is the idle supposed to be?

And BTW Sint3k, thanks for the info!

Ill connect to my car and see what the sensor reads at idle
