The cable that goes from starter to alternator has been cut and wire nutted together. It looks melted . Might be the problem?

 

Sounds like an issue there. I'm considering running a shorter wire from the fuse box to the alternator, the way we do on 3800 cars for a better route. Make sure the current sensor on the wire above the battery is still in good shape, too.
