Default What vehicles is the LS4 available in?

I see the GTP, Impala and such have it but what else.

How similar is it to an LS1/6?

LS1/6 is a GenIII architecture while LS4 is a GenIV architecture. The heads are LS6 castings without the sodium filled valves. Accessory drive is totally different as is the water pump for length. The crank is shorter on each end by a few millimeters once again due to length considerations. It has DOD while GenIII engines never did. So cams and rocker should/do swap, heads will swap, other items will vary.

Interesting, I wouldn't think a few millimeters of manipulation would aid in engine fitment. However I'm sure they have crammed 10lbs of engine in a 2lb bag here.

Yep... its pretty tight in there. Accessory drive is damn near flush with the engine. And there is only a couple inches in between the engine and the passenger side wheel well.

Interesting indeed. Are there any companies making aftermarket cranks for this platform as of yet?

I'm assuming that the millimeters helped meet some internal engineering spec for engine clearances (i.e. maintenance, etc.).

As for aftermarket cranks, I don't know of one. However, I guess that someone that is creative could make one. The length change is all in the nose of the crank and the flexplate mounting flange. So, I'm thinking that someone could have those to areas machined shorter by the appropriate lengths. All the other dimensions are common to the LSX architecture.

Saw a beautiful light brown Impala today loaded with brown leather~moonnroof~ & 300HP V-8 with duals. Thought you had to buy the SS to get the V-8, guess not. What a sleeper !

It was probably a LTZ which is the 3.9L with 242hp, they have dual exhaust.

Im guessing probably the Rainier (sp)... I think it is also an option in the Envoy.

i mean converting the engine to RWD and bolting a t56 to it, i have one accesible, reason why i ask, for my project 240.

Somebody would have to actually check, but I'm guessing the chances are better than even. GM created a new 4T65eHD case for this engine/tranny combo. I assume this was to use the standard LSX bolt pattern and accomodate the starter. But it could be for very different reasons.

YEah, that and the fact that the SS is not available in that color. '06 came in black, silver, dark red, laser blue and white.

The ls5 might become popular in cars where the nigine bay is compact !
