Default Your W-body leave you stranded? Check this.

Have had a situation happen 2 (well actually 3) times now and thought I'd post this incase this happends to any of you. 4-5 months ago was just crusing down the road and my car just died, had all electrical (lights, radio, and all other elec. stuff), but the car just wouldn't run. Coasted off to the side of the road, tried to start it a couple of times and just NOTHING. Had the car towed to the dealer and long story short, they found that my ECM ingition #1 fuse was popped. After further digging, they found a wiring harness for my ECM that ran down by my tranny bellhousing was rubbing and had rubbed enough to wear thru the insulation and go down to bare wire and short as it would touch the metal of the tranny. So they fixed that and sent me on my way and things have been fine. That was, as I stated, 4-5 months ago. Well, 2 days ago, I was out doing some logging with my Predator and I was crusing along and the car just died again. Well, I kinda figured what to check and sure enough, the ECM ign. #1 fuse was popped again. So I took one of the spare fuses our fuse box has, replaced the popped one, and the car started fine. That was Wed. afternoon. I probably should have went straight to the dealer right then and there, but I didn't. Well, Thurs. nite comes along and I'm coming home from getting something to eat, when low and behold, the car dies again. So, off to the side of the road I go, try another fuse, but this time the car doesn't start when the popped fuse is replaced. It keeps popping the new fuses as soon as I turn the key to start the car. So, on a transport she goes (thank god for Onstar) and back to the dealer. So today they look at her and they are kinda mystified. They have gotten the car to start again, but they are not 100% sure what the problem is. They put a volt meter on the ECM ign. fuse and it will spike when the car is started, so there is a spike going thru somewhere. Well, they replaced the ECM with a new one and everything seems to be working fine. No spike on the volt meter when the car starts, and the car starts every time. But the tech still isn't convinced the ECM is the entire problem. So the 'ole girl gets to set at the shop until we can find more concrete evidence. So I get the hot rod Malibu as a courtesy vehicle for the next few days. I feel so ordinary. Watching old people have sex is more exciting than this car!!

Anywho, I thought I'd post this incase any of y'all run into this problem yourself so you at least my have an idea where to start. The tech said this is the first W-body they've seen doing this so I guess I'm the lucky one.

Subject: No Crank / No Start Condition - Concern May Be Intermittent - keywords nostart nocrank #PIC3906A - (11/29/2006)

Models: 2006 Chevrolet Impala and Monte Carlo Built On or Before 11/30/05

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The following diagnosis might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the symptom(s) described in this PI.

Condition/Concern:
No crank / no start condition. The concern may be intermittent.

Recommendation/Instructions:
This can be caused by a poor solder joint between the ignition main relay and the printed circuit board. The ignition main relay is not serviceable. If voltage checks identify a bad ignition main relay, it will be necessary to replace the Underhood Bussed Electrical Center (UBEC) to repair this condition.

A correction of this condition has been implemented into production as of November 30th, 2005.

Please follow this diagnostic or repair process thoroughly and complete each step. If the condition exhibited is resolved without completing every step, the remaining steps do not need to be performed.

GM bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, NOT a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform these technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions, and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, DO NOT assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See your GM dealer for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
