Default No Oil

Hey guys,

I dont post much but i read everyday and i just want to say what a great website, you guys have so much information!

Anyways so i get ready to go to the track for the first time with the impala on saturday and when i start up the DIC says low engine oil. I shut it off quickly and check the dipstick and ***ker is bone dry. Needless to say im not too happey and its going back to the dealer as we speak. The imp has 3300 miles on it, what could have possibly cuased this?? i never beat on the vehicle or raced it. Does anyone think it is possible they could give me a new car or let me out of the lease?? what are some things i should bring up to my service advisor?? thanks in advance.

Well, you're not getting out of this car, that i know for sure. As far as what to ask them to check out, i don't know.

Have you ever noticed puddles beneath the car? It takes about 1.5-2qts to be missing before you don't see any on the dipstick, and possibly more for it to notice enough to warn you...so it would be hard to understand, from a dealer standpoint, that you never noticed this before.

FWIW, we do eat up a lot of oil. I've been down a quart & a half between oil changes at 6000mi intervals or so...the LSx engines are notorious for this. Check it early & often, IMO...speaking of, i should probably go out and do this

Nope no puddles anywhere. . . not at work or home, i just dont see how it could eat that much at 3000 miles.

You don't have to tell him anything special, just whats going on. Have him/her check for bulletins, there are about 5 bulletins for oil leaks on these cars. Mine is leaking oil as a matter of fact, but not much.

I guess I'm lucky so far. Checked OK at about 2,300 and 1st change at 3200 with no noticible loss.

Maybe mine hasn't started leaking yet. Anywhere specific I should be watching for leaks, besides the ground.

Put the up in the air and see if the bottom of your engine is covered with oil. If it is like mine, then you may have an oil leak. I never would have noticed it if I hadn't raised the car. Does not burn/loose any oil from change to change, and does not leave a puddle. I have not messed with it yet but I sure will before it goes out of warranty.

Maybe the oil was low when you bought it? Did you check it before then? The tranny fluid is a bigger pain to check.

Not i, but i make sure to look at both sides of the stick to see which side is lower. One side usually accumulates more on the way up the tube and gives off a false reading.

Thanks. I'll get the ramps out if I can't stuff my fat a$$ under far enough to see.

Mine chewed up about a quart from 0 to 2500 miles, however now I am almost at 6000 and running Mobil 1 and it hasn't burned a drop.

I burned off almost 3 quarts in the first 3500 miles and then 1/2 quart in the next 1000. Since then (6000 miles) about 1/4 has gone missing. Switching to synthetic next change.

Same thing here! I'm about 5500 miles running Mobil 1 and my oil level is slightly below the top marker on the dip stick.

Jesus J Oil Consumption!!! Mine doesnt use any to the point where it noticable on the stick in 3500 miles on Mobil 1. But then again I broke it in right, it got the tar pounded out of it with less than 20 miles on it, that first 100 miles the loud pedal spent more time matted than the law allows haha

But FWIW i rebuilt an LS2 in an 05' GTO that spun a bearing and that mysteriously lost 5.5 qts of oil with no leaks too.

pcv system is weak. if you don't have any leaks, this is the problem. at least it was on my car.

mine would suck a quart every 3200 miles.

dunno

Its been improved on alot over the years, and the way you could verify if its a PCV issue is pull the accordian hose off and see if the TB blade is blasted with an oil film.

This GTO never had any visible smoke ever too... nor did it have an oily inside of the intake... so that just leaves Rings... whether it be flutter, gaps or cylinder wall issues... IDK...

When is the last time you checked the oil? 3300 miles and you havent done an oil change or checked the oil before, on a new car? New vehilcles will burn oil durring break-in and should be checked often. At I bought my Impala in July and had to take it in because it had lost a quart because oil was leaking around the cam sensor.
