Default Oil Consumption, Spark Plugs, ....

It was a nice day today so I washed the car and checked the oil. I bought that 15,000mile Mobil Synthetic oil and I will be changing the oil next week. In 7,000 miles I haven't burnt through any. I will also be changing the plugs too and I am going to try some Autolite Iridiums. Here is the part number: XP5243. I know our cars take the 5245 but I want one heat range colder to reduce any KR. Just thought I'd share.

Best regards,

-Mike

Not to be a bearer of bad news, but if you really expect oil to last 15,000 miles you wasted your money. The only way I could see 15000 miles is if you drive 100% highway, and even that is pushing it. Stop and go driving and short trips build up water in the oil. This water is the main thing you get rid of while draining you oil. I wouldn't ever push oil past the 7500 mark, personally I do Mobil 1 every 5000.

If you want best performance use the TR55 copper plugs. Their a little over 2 bucks a piece. You will have to change them every 10-15k. It just depends what you are after longevity or tip top performance.

Definitely the NGK's, advanced has them for 1.77 a piece, and the autolite plugs dont idle as nice. As far as the extended life oil goes I read that its the same exact formulation as the regular oil, and if you are driving the car hard you are supposed to use the severe duty service schedule.

If you guys are serious about changing the Oil Change Interval, I highly suggest reading up at BoBIsTheOilGuy . These people know more about oil than anyone else on the net. From what I've read, yes, it is possible to go in upwards of 10k miles on an oil change. For a performance car, it might not be so good, at least not early in a DoD car where Oil is far more important. I'll let you read and get your own opinion though.

But just for info of what I've learned from there so far:

Synthetic is nearly 100% intened for extended oil drains, thats about it.
The Oil Life Monitor in our vehicles uses calculations that GM has comprised from testing on NON-Synthetic motor oil, not synthetic.
There are debates on changing the filter, and what types to use as well.

Just thought I'd pass the info, just incase you haven't seen the site yet.

I would never go 15,000 miles between oil changes. I ususally change it at 4,500 miles. I have had good luck with Autolites but I will consider TR55's. Do they make make Iridiums or Platinums in the TR55 configuration? Thanks in advance.

NGK makes the platinums and Irridiums, but the copper plugs give you the smoothest idle and are less likely to cause detonation.
