Where's the coolant going?

21,000mi - I've got next to nothing in the coolant resivoir when hot, and not much more when cold. Where the hell is it going and should i just top it off or see the dealer and let them do it? I can now hear the coolant swishing through the dash area, so i'm guessing it got some air in the system, too.

Anyone else having this issue?

Mine has been steady as a rock since new (10500 on it now), no gurgling, no adding. Check it about every 3 fill-ups.

I had the same issue Buff... about the same mileage too... I never checked mine when new, so I don't know how much was in there to start with... but I filled mine up when I saw it was way low, and it hasn't gone down at all since...

Told my service tech about it, and he said it was normal for it to "use" some up every 3-6k miles... but he said it shouldn't have been THAT low.

Mine has read high for a while, then it read low for a while, and now its right on the line again. Check the radiator hoses, heater core hoses, around the heads and thermostat housing, and the floorboard if it is damp if the heater core is leaking, if the head gasket is really bad it will show up in the oil, if you dont find anything take it to the dealer anyhow if you can find time just so there is some documentation if something goes wrong and they try to say that you let it get low and messed it up. Check the coolant temp sensor too, the thread sealant on my cam sensor was crappy and my car was pissing oil pretty soon after I got the car.

Mine had done that when it was new, i changed the thermo and it never did it again after that... some sort of enigma lol

22000 on mine and haven't lost a drop, my powering steering has been low and had to put in a quart of trans fluid.

Buff - 27K and dead nuts on the line.

Looks like oil consumption has slowed way down.

Yea mine is empty,,I think I should get some extra and fill to the line. I only have 2,500 miles

I had the dreaded where is the antifreeze slowwwllly going phenomenon.
Found my problem when changing the oil tonight. The water pump output hose is leaking somewhere. Guess I'll pull the thing off and give it a good inspection this weekend and replace the clamps at least. Probably the hose too since I dont want to do it twice. What a mess.

okie123 May 19, 2007 10:04 PM

The compression clamp was not on seated properly coming out of the water pump. After 42k it finally leaked enough for me to see it. Next time you change your oil look at the bottom of the U on the hose coming out of the pump. See if its damp or wet.

You will also need long compression clamp pliers to even think about re-adjusting the compression clamp. The top clamp is not leaking but its not on very good either.
Its next to impossible to reach.

Will look into that, thanks. She'll be at the dealer before i need to do oil again, though, so i might tell them to do it.
