Default Winter Driving

I really love these cars especially the Grand Prix GXP. Unfortunate for me that I live in the Cleveland area which limits my winter driving options to something with front, 4x4, or all-wheel drive. Right now I have a 00 camaro ss convt and a stupid piece of **** (handed down) 97 toyota corolla for winter, I doesn't even have ABS. I was just wondering who all here is driving there cars in winter snow situations. I'm sure these have traction controls and wanted to know what there like in snow. Thanks.

I live in Toronto, Canada and I have a 06 GXP. I drove through a few really bad storms last winter on the stock tires and I was REALLY surprised. Even on the HWY at 60-70mph through wet snow/ice I was good. The traction control and stability control are really good. I tested the stab control on a snowy road and it works pretty good.

This year I bought some 18's with Wintersport M3's used off a guy, but only after did I realize they are 245/40/18 so they are smaller in diameter then stock by more then 3% Going to try them out anyways and hope for the best.

I would say this car is a really great all year car.

We get a lot of ice, and a little snow. Keep the TC on and stay out of the throttle, it seems to do fine. Now it can't wave a stick at my wifes Subie Legacy GT. . .but it does pretty well for a torquey monster.

Either buy the new Eagle F-1 A/S tires for all year round or get the Dunlop M3 winter tires. Hands down the M3 is the best winter tire out there for our cars.

I've had my SS through 2 Buffalo winters now and she did real well. The stock 18" GY RSA's did well the first winter, but i decided to get winter tires last year. Kept the size the same and it was 100x better than with the all seasons. I bought the Pirelli SnowSport 240's very lightly used on eBay for $300.

Oh yeah...and you may want to go Edit then choose "Delete thread" on your duplicate thread.

Hey Buff, Do you run winter tires on all fours or just the front. I've been thinking about getting snows for my extra wheels.

Run all 4, otherwise you are just asking to spin out in a corner. . or under hard braking.

Yes...all four corners. I didn't take my snows off until the end of July and the fronts were damn near bald, so i'm gonna need a new pair...but yes, all four, for the reasons eddie mentioned.

I read up on a lot of winter driving things and the one thing everyone agreed on is that you always do all four. I think Tirerack had a great article/review on winter tires, explaining exactly why you do this, and they tested a couple cars with just fronts, or just rears, and then all 4. Good stuff...it's probably still available (or will be again very soon)

Aren't those the really pricey ones?

I dunno, Goodyear has kinda turned me off to their brand by the crappy meats GM put on this car...

They are 191 a tire. Honestly I have been using them now for 1200 miles and its a HUGE improvement over the RSA's. Think of a mix between the F-1 and the assurance triple treads.

I drove my Impala SS through our Canadian winter on stock tires. Never had a problem. If you don't drive stupid you will be fine. I was actually pretty impressed with their grip. The traction control system works pretty well too!

Default Goodyear?

Taz,
Arent those goodyears a directional tire? I would buy those for the GXP, but considering the 2 different tire sizes and, I believe with those tires being directional, they wouldnt work out to well on the GXP. Let me know for sure if they are directional....

Thanks!

There are 3 options for the GXP for stock tire sizes. The factory Potenzas, the Eagle F-1's (these will be what I choose when I need tires), and the blizzaks are now available too. Just saw them on tirerack the other day. It doesnt matter if they are directional or not, you cant rotate them anyways.

True, you cant really rotate them, you can go side to side. Although that really isnt helping with rotating either. Except it will at least keep the tires balanced, but tire balance would be noticeable and then required anyway. If they are directional you can't rotate side to side either. so I guess no matter what there is really no true tire rotation with the 2 different sizes. Guess the Goodyears will be what I get. I dont really want to buy 2 sets, 1 for winter and 1 for summer. Looks like the Goodyears will do pretty descent in the winter. Thanks for the help everyone....

Thanks
