Well Here is what I did. I talked to a custom paint shop and they told me to clean the part throughly, so I used Simple Green and scrubbed the entire surface and wiped dry and then let air dry for and Hour. I went and purchased the clear and paint. So the paint shop told me to put the clear on the entire surface of the cover several light coats letting the clear dry between coats, about 30 minutes between coats after 4 or 5 coats the surface is smooth. Let the cover dry for two days and then you can tape the areas you want to put color on and put several very light coats take your time and don't rush let the paint dry between coats. For the lettering just use some Vaseline to coat and the paint won't stick so you can just take a small micro fiber towel and just wipe it right off.
Now wait and let dry a slow cure and in about a month --I will clear the whole cover
should last a long time.

Beautiful job, even from the phone camera pictures. Would you mind sharing the paint type of the clear and type and color of the red?

Did the shop advise you NOT to install the cover for a month until it cures?

Interesting. Paint with clear BEFORE you paint with color??? Regardless, it looks great. I'm definitely going to repaint mine this spring. I previously left the center portion alone and painted the "wings" silver...but I'm going to paint the center part black this time around.

They said you do not have to spend hours sanding to have a smooth finish.

Vaseline on the letters, eh? I bet Mike with the white Monte is kicking himself now. I think he said it took him 2 hours to mask off the letters using tape and an Exacto knife.

Mel...what did you use to tape off the center section? The line, from here, looks perfect. I got a bit of "feathering" from paint that managed to slide under the edge of the painters tape.

I'm thinkin the clear filled in the texture of the cover enough to allow the tape to seal well. No need for the pic. Thanks.
