Newbie of sorts
I bought a 2006 Monte Carlo SS back in June of 2006. I've been watching this forum ever since, looking to come up with a plan for my car. Considering I traded a 2001 Camaro SS on this car (sad story), I want more from it.
For the exhaust I got tired of waiting for Corsa (I've emailed them about once a month) and decided to go with a custom job. I loved the sound clips that were posted of from the Count of Monte Carlo, and would like to duplicate that setup. I also want to put a K&N Kit on it. My questions, will this throw a code? Also, based on some recent postings, it appears that this setup may make the DOD a little rough. I would like to tune it, however I don't have the knowledge to do that with an HP tuner, and based on all the postings about Diablo, I don't want to even consider them. I live in PA, are there any speed shops that anyone knows about that could do an HP tune? Thank you for reading this long post.
Regarding tuning, IDK of any in PA, but Westers Garage/Tunetime has a great tune, from what I've heard. They're in Jersey...don't know where in PA you are so that may/not be an option. VectorMotorsports also has a tune that most seem to love. You can buy theirs online (plus core charge until you return your stock E/TCM's). Diablo's tune is great, the price is usually right, and the handheld part is quite convenient...it's just the lack of tranny support (and now overall dependability) that kills'em.
The motor mount flip is nice and easy...and there is just one to do (unlike the old/current 3400/3800/3900 if you're familiar with them). Some lube, a breaker bar, ratchet, and a couple 15mm sockets and you're good to go.
From DRcustomparts, you can buy custom mounting plates and STB's for the car. They make a WORLD of difference...this is usually my first recommendation when it comes to modding. They're just GMPP STB's from an older buick with custom-made mounting plates. The front bar needs to be modified, though, as it makes the hood bulge and/or hits the alternator when the engine torques. DRcustomparts does this for you, and the package is only $140. He can also do custom paint. Last I heard, though, they took a bit of a hiatus while one of the guys does some work on his garage/shop.
For all of the aforementioned places, add a www and a dotcom and you can generally find their respective sites for more info.
The only thing about the 3inch catted Downpipe.... For me the code oddly enough comes at low speed or idling... Even more odd is that I had this pipe on for almost a month before I saw the code which was for the rear O2... I personally havent decided which tuner to use yet.... In the mean time I was thinking about installing a O2 simulator but I think someone said that it will not work with these cars...I might also try a different O2....I had this convoluted theorey for awhile that maybe the converter to pipe gasket was causing an issue.....
I replaced the resonator with 2' of 2.5" stainless pipe, 3" catted down pipe, and 2 2.25" offset inlet center outlet Hooker Aero Chambers, stock tail pipes.

Flipping the stock MM does nothing to the ride quality.
Installing an aftermarket poly mount, which has little to no give, will create some vibration when coming to a stop. Supposedly the MSP (?) poly mount is a lot better than some others...you can get it from 3800performance's website, I believe. ZZP was WAY too harsh for me up in the cold weather in Buffalo. When it's warm, it's much softer and forgiving, but in the cold it's like a rock, and absorbs NONE of the vibration from the engine & tranny. It just passes it on to the cabin. I'd guess it would be much of the same for you in PA.
Regarding the codes, a new cat-back exhaust will not throw a code. A new DP or high-flow cat might. Yes, it can be eliminated via HPtuners.
