cdoggy81, it is a Taboo. In simplest terms, some native Hawaiians (while having converted to Christianity) still heavily believe in the Gods and Goddess, one of the most powerful being Pele, Goddess of the Volcano. Many of the belifs still stem from having a great respect for the aina (pronounced eye-na, meaning land). The land belongs to the deities, and the people just live in harmony and care for the land, lest they incurr their wrath.
As such, taking lava rock from any of the islands here (BUT EVEN MORE SO FROM THE BIG ISLAND) is considered extremely bad luck. There have been numerous of it occurring, and when it does it's always bad. Ranging from something simple like your car not starting or failing on the road, to extreme like getting very sick and/or dying. If sick, you'll not get better til the rock/property is returned to a Kahuna (meaning priest or witch doctor) who needs to perform a ceremony (I forget what it's called) in which the property is returned to the aina and whatever spirit or illness has hold of you is released as well.
As I said...in a nutshell
