fuel pressure problems need help

i had just left my house and down the street the car turned off. then i check my gauge and there was no fuel pressure.But when i towed it home after a while it had pressure again. My question is when i turn it on its at 40 but will drop to 38 or 37 sometimes and then i give it a little gas to idel and hold it there it will drop to 35 psi is that right? i thought was not suppose to drop. it my 96 trans am

I would suspect the fuel pump by the symptoms. I've had two go out and both behaved similar.

ok cool thanks man yea the guy that had it before me ran the tank dry. when i picked it there was no fuel at all in the tank

its the pump. you could alwaya pull the filter off check it but. would almost guar.the pump

If your pump turns out to be good, check your fuel pump relay. I know it sounds crazy but I had a problem like yours and it turned out that my relay was getting too hot and was not sending enough amps to the fuel pump to keep it running. I replaced my pump and had the same problems. Good thing I had a friend that was a car freak and pinned it down to the relay. I haven't had a problem since.

wheres the relay to the pump? just in case. think i might be the pump cause you know how you hear the fuel pump clear when you turn the key well mine you really have to listen for it. going to check the pump right know and stuff.
