Default Clunk Diddleee dunk

So when i downshift from 3rd to second at lets say 40-45mph really hard, i will get a pretty big clunk from the rear end. But never while driving normally or in any other downshifts. If i rev-match the downshift then it won't clunk, only on a cold drop in to second at high rpm. do i need new gears in the rear end? or?

So worst case, lets say i need new gears. Can i install them myself? Is it a DIY thing to take the diff out and swap the gears? Also, what are a good set of gears for street that add some decent acceleration? 3.42?

Well, you are saying it is only 3 to 2 downshift and no other gear?

I think thats fairly normal with a stock rear, also if you have an aftermarket TA on hard down shifts it can actually hit the tunnel of the body. But i really just think its the factory slop and the rear catching back up with the car.

Oh and I prefer Motive gears and a 3.73 or 4.10s on a M6. 3.42s are a stock gear and not enough IMO

Could be a couple of things one a broken or worn tranny mount. Also, do you have an aftermarket torque arm as I found when I installed mine years ago and didn't properly set the camber (angle of rear diff) then under acceleration or downshifting my tq arm would actually hit the bottom of the car causing a clunk in the cabin.

its a little more like a grinding kind of clunk... i dont have aftermarket torque arms, everything suspension-wise is in my sig. My tranny mount is going out though... but how would that cause a clunk in the rear??
