If you want to use the stock heads, update the valve train, springs, rockers and a good cam bring big differences. I use the comp cam xtreme CCA-07-466-8 Advertised Duration 268/276, Lift .570/.565 with great results 352rwhp and 343rwt.

I can't recommend a set up because I have no idea what your performance goals are.
I can tell you I'm running a moroso CAI, Trickflow elbow, ported/polished stock TB+airfoil, GM 846 cam, with full comp cams upgraded valvetrain, edelbrock mid tubes, modified stock (catted Y-pipe) and a "Borla"mouth (slp loudmouth with a borla muffler) exhaust, 160 stat, stock injectors, and I'm making 374 rwhp, I forget my torque numbers but they are right around there as well. i have no idea where my dyno sheet escaped to], but it is a very fun, cheaply built motor. I have a little over 2,000 investsed 'into mods an5d the car runs consistent 12.3's-12.5's on street tires. I like my set up and it is easily daily driven.

edit* forgot to mention I did a little head work on my stock heads as well

12.3 for just over $2,000...THat is quite impressive. My car is 100% stock except for rims, but I have mods in my closet waiting to go on after Christmas: GMMG with Corsa clones= $650, LPP headers and ORY=$500, airfoil=$15, TB bypass=$10, 160 degree thermostat=$24, G-tech perfomance meter=$75. All of those prices include shipping...I still need stage 8 locking header bolts, felpro header gaskets, over the valve plugs and wires set and I have to get my tips welded on. I figure I should be just around 290 with those and a CAI, intake elbow, lt4 knock module, free mods and a mail order tune will be getting done soon too. I figure with those I will easily be past 305 rwhp and maybe 320.

That just goes to show you that with the money you save with an lt1 you can spice it up and make it run with the ls1s. Sure, they can mod theirs too, but I have a friend who is my age who hasnt modded his 2002 low miles non ws6 trans am at all (besides a K&N filter)because he is still making payments on a 21 thousand dollar car. Still, I love his car and the looks of the ls1 are in many ways better, but you are just talking about modding the engine. What bodystyle is your v6?..I paid $5,400 in cash for mine, the miles were at 90K and now that I look back I payed too much, but I was really young to cars and the TA was in fantastic shape.

I like the hp/tq curve much better in my ls1 car. To sum it up the ls1 feels like the modern day high performance muscle car that it is, and the lt1 still has that classic roast the tires off the back muscle car feel.
