Default stock air intake on a built engine?

the first mod I did when I bought my firebird 5 1/2 years ago was a CAI. when I returned it to stock with plans on selling it I sold the SLP CAI I had bought with it. plans changed and now im here with a cam/light headwork 350 that pushes 7000 rpm.... and I have the stock air intake. now this is only temporary. I want to get a fiberglass WS6 style hood and do the LS1 lid conversion but that is a little down the road, I don't like spending money on something I'll just change later so I have been putting off getting a CAI. has anyone kept their stock intake until this stage of the game? when you swapped it what kind of power/track gains did you get? I got 4/10ths and 4 mph from stock to stock w/ CAI years ago but I think most of the gains can be attributed to weather/better DA. its not holding me back like 30-40 rwhp is it?

am I the only idiot that has done this?

It's holding you back a TON, especially up top. I'm willing to bet 20-30 HP is being lost up top. Get that out of there ASAP.

on my build with k&n and trickflow elbow i was pulling ~4" of vacuum from about 5900 up. power just flattened out. i would imagine with a stock intake you have quite a restriction.

Ok here is what you do. You take out the factory air box and go to O'reillys or Vatozone or wherever and buy one of their cheap "Spectre" air filters (24$), and a piece of their "do it yourself cold air intake pipes" I think like a 45 degree piece ( ~10$) and voila. Cold air intake. Works great and it goes all the way down behind the front bumper for plenty of fresh cold air.

D

I can get pictures if you would like.

Here ya go...

that looks like a good idea. I dont have time to do it today, gotta be at the dyno in 1.5 hours. I'll report back. I dont expect too good of numbers being its a big stall, stock intake, and to top it off a mustang dyno.
