Default how much for head replacement?

i think i may need a new set of heads because while trying to start my car i hear a loud thunk then sometimes it would kill or crank up. im thinking it maybe a pushrod issue or something of that nature. well since i dont have that much money to do any real mods i will be looking into getting a set of stock lt1 heads. how much should replacing heads should cost at a shop and how long does it take? im located in houston

It's a ton of labor. Honestly a full 2 -day job. Figure well over a grand in labor alone.

I won't even get into any specifics as to why you think it's your cylinder heads. I've neevr heard a motor make a loud thunk, and immediately think it's the heads.

Sorry, but that really doesn't give us any clue as to what your actual problem is. You need to be a little more specific about this noise, and other symptoms.

You can pick up some used heads for 300 bucks from a core supplier.
The price of removal and replacement varries from shop to shop. But I wouldn't be surprised if you got a quote of $1600. They will probably keep your car for a couple days.

okay to explain what its doing when i try to start it, it sounds similar to that of when the tranny mount breaks but only a metal to metal sound under the hood. Sometimes it would start sometimes it wouldnt. But when it does the idle would bounce around for a bit until i give it gas then the idles are fine. But if it idles too low it starts the tapping, thunking sound then stumbles and dies. It also does it when I put it in drive or reverse and turn the wheel. It stumbles and dies. Now my car just sits there with a fresh dead battery from all that cranking. Now I know i need a new opti and coil but would that cause an odd sound and bad miss like that?

If you charge the battery and can get some kind of sound clip, the ppl might be able to help you out more efficiently...Im alright at car knowledge and that doesn't sound like a head problem to me...

edit: actually, I read OP's last post. A bad opti would do that wouldn't it?

what does it idle at? I wouldnt think its the heads either and the p0300 is an engine misfire code so it could be your opti after all...?

A P0300 is a random/multiple misfire code. Unfortunately, it's one of the worst codes you can get, because it doesn't give you any specific information. A P0300 could be set by bad plugs, bad wires, bad coil, bad opti, bad ICM, or bad wiring anywhere in between. Inspect and replace the following things in the order listed...
plugs
wires
coil
opti
ICM.
