Default opti problem

I was hoping someone could help me out. Here is the problem: ther are times my car wont start and times when it is running and it will start missing, when his happens my tach goes crazy and it starts bucking bad like Ive lost ign. Ive tried to check the opti but do not have a scope, I do have refrence voltage and pcm ground. The way Ive gotten it to start when it wont is to spray WD-40 in the vent tube for the opti. After awhile it will start so I suspect the opti is dying. Anybody know of a test I can do to verify it is the opti, or do you think it is the opti? Any help would be great.

When was the last time you put a fresh cap and rotor on it??? Everyone likes to curse the opti and nobody bothers to treat it like every other distributor and change the cap and rotor as tuneup items.

At any rate I think you are buying a whole new opti now because the WD-40 can not be good for the optical sensor, as it dries up it will surely screwup the lenses

No not setting any codes, as far as ruining the optical sensor I dont know. But if it was just a cap and rotor I dont know why I would see a problem with my tach as it reads the primary side of the coil. I just didnt know if anybody else had seen this problem. With alot that I have read on the opti's most suggest the cap and rotor first unless there is rust on the reluctor wheel and at that point you would lose your cam signal. I have not been able to verify this. I should be able to check for injector pulse right? I just thought of that and probably should have thought of that sooner. I do know it is the orginal opti (car has 61,500 miles on it). Again thank you for your input and any other help you have

If the cap and rotor are shot interfering with the spark that would interfere with the tach signal from the coil too.

Stock opti works fine, so long as it is maintained and the wrench behind it is competent.
