Default Camshaft dowel problem.

I'm putting together a 94 LT1 corvette and the stock timing cover will not go on it is hitting the dowel or alignment pin which ever you call it, in the camshaft the dowel is to long.
End play is good
turns free
gear alignment is good

What's the deal?
Should I just cut off the dowel or is something wrong with the part?
Thanks in advance!

the cam dowel pin should go thru the timing gear, which then goes into the opti

Don't know how the dowel pin is hitting the timing cover...it lines up with the optispark hole.

I'm confused.

+1. Shouldn't hit anything. Do you have pics?

Thanks for the replies
no pics

I don't have it in front of me, but the timing gear dowel goes through the cover into the opti?
Assebly order:
Camshaft > face plate > timing gear > camshaft bolts > and the timing cover? am i missing something after the cam bolts and before the cover maybe or does the opti go on next?

There is a hole in the timing cover for the opti. So the cam dowel pin should never hit the timing cover.

That's the correct order. We just have no idea what you're seeing, as it's physically impossible for the dowel pin to hit the timing cover. Even if it was a foot long it wouldn't hit.

Should look like this (95-'97 timing cover. Cam has a longer dowel pin to engage the back of the vented distributor):

Now if you are trying to use a non vented opti timing cover with a longer dowel cam meant for a vented opti, then I can see you having issues (scroll down to the pics of the different timing covers):

In that case you can always just swap the dowel pins.

After I got my LE camshaft and was installing it, the dowel pin was too long. In this case you can trim it to size or find a smaller one which my builder had laying around his shop which fit perfect.

I dremeled mine down to the same length as the stock dowel on my first cam swap on my 93.

This time I am just converting to vented opti.

I took a dremel to mine too in order to make it fit.

Dude, stop.

You guys are killing me here. All aftermarket cams come with the dowel pin longer for the vented-opti's which he CLEARLY does not have. Take a ball-peen hammer and give the dowel 1 or 2 small taps. It will go into the cam further and cure all of your timing cover woes. If it is a factory cam you can either cut it with a dremel or replace it with a shorter dowel. Cutting it will be easier to do. The pin is 100% useless on a non-vented opti, it simply goes into a big hole on the timing gear so you get the cam aligned correctly, timing wise.
