The harness is optional. It supplies more amperage to the pump. Not necessary until your making some power. The instructions for installing it is very easy and has pictures.

If the guy working on your car wants to drop the tank, let him. It is a pain. I've dropped the tank on my car and like 3 times on my friends 3rd gen. I still haven't found out how lt1 guys get away with the trap door method. I thought there are hard lines that go across the tank? Well at least I know that 3rd gens have hard lines.. its been awhile since I dropped mine. I know ls1's have quick disconnects at the opening.

If he won't cut the trap door, then I HIGHLY suggest you find a way to do it yourself, as you'll get HAMMERED with labor costs, likely around $500+ JUST for the labor. It is very labor-intensive, as the entire exhaust and rear axle assembly need to come out. Find some friends willing to let you use their garage or something. Trust me.

The harness kit is plug and play - there's no cutting or splicing. The stock wiring has a tough job of supplying ample voltage to the pump at WOT. By directly connecting the pump to the alternator using a higher gauge wire the pump receives the constant voltage it needs at WOT. All of the info you need is on the Racetronix webpage.

The LT1s also have quick disconnects located near the pump. Just cut the hole to size. Easy breezy.

If you can have it done for cheap, hope he does it right! I'd hate to see it go in and wired and/or installed wrong after putting the tank, axle, and harness back in. I still swear by the trap door.

And BTW, who owns your car, your mechanic or you? I'd do it myself if he won't. There's a reason so many people do the trap door method.

No one can answer your last question but you. If it were me I'd just do it now.
