there is no difference in the dash itself. the difference was the console and gauge cluster. the dash in the Z28's are different.

Not quite, Pontiac as well as Chevy did an interior update in 97. Since the question is about Birds, the 97s have the digital odometer like those found in 98+, cluster lens bezel just like 98+ and newer style console like the 98+. Also in 97 the a/c people on the vent settings went from "solid" filled in to out lines like those found in 98+. The radio design was switched in 94 and the steering wheels were updated in 95, both those remained the same general design through the model run. So what did changed? The 01-02s have an ebony colored interior which is a shade darker then what's commonly referred to as dark pewter/graphite styles found in the earlier cars 93-00 cars. I have a 01 ebony cluster trim in my TA, as well as the steering wheel, this pic shows the color difference and how ebony is darker.

edit: The only reason I know this is because I did an interior conversion from tan to graphite, so I had to learn which years I could get colors from and which years I would have a color difference, can you tell by the pic when I had to learn that lol

Shouldn't be, the only differences are color. What you may have is the dash pad not sitting exactly in place, I changed mine out years ago. I remember it not being flush in one spot and I had to push down on it to get one of the tabs or what ever they use to seat correctly. When the pad cracks its common for it to come out in pieces, if some thing was left in one of the holes that could cause your issue or just a tab not being seated all the way.

The upper dash pads are different in the firebird/TA for 93-96 and 97-02 as I just had to replace mine and found this out. They are completely different part #'s from GM. They look almost identical, but you will see that the center vent for the windshield is lined up differently for the LS1 cars.

93-96 - 10274437
97+ - 10422746

they are slightly different. the curviture of the 97-02 dash top is different than the 93-96. not up by the windshield but down below the defrost vent there is a difference. i've seen someone put a 97-02 dash top on a 93-96 dash and there is a gap at one of the corners down below the vent.
