Default Starter snapped in half

I have a LT1 with a bad head gasket, the starter would not turn the engine (nasty noise) but I can turn it by hand via the crank shaft bolt with a breaker bar. The car sat for about 6 months before I bought it. When I pulled the starter the whole nose was busted off, the flex plate teeth and the starter teeth look fine though. Could the engine have been hydo locked and snapped the starter then somehow relieved the presure? Is there any other reason the front half of the starter would have snapped off other than hydro-lock? I will post photos if that helps.

yep i broke 4 starters befor i fixed mine. pull all the plugs, roll the motor BACKWARDS by hand to get the fluid out of the cylinders. replace plugs start car for about a 1-2 minutes. STOP drain all oil and change filter, run the car to operating temperature. STOP change oil and filter again. now go play. mine hydro locked twice from a bad intake gasket not a head gasket after my cam swap. this is how i fixed mine. you have to get all the water?coolant out of the oil or you will spin a bearing. hope this helps.

Yes, a hydrolocked engine can break a starter.

I have found bent rods by measuring how far in the hole the piston is with it at TDC. One piston .008 deeper than the rest was a bent rod.
