Japan Export Camaro's??

Hello, I'm new to the site, wondering if anybody has ANY info on JAPAN export Camaro's? How many were produced, are they valuable or are the less value in North America? I have a 1996 Z28 exported back to Canada and would like to find out more about it (other than the different side mirrors, and tailights). Thanks in advance if anyone can help me out with some info.. anything. :)

they have turn indicators on each side of the front fenders, other than that i believe they r tuned for less power, not sure bout that

Smokeshow_2006 Jul 6, 2009 09:29 PM

they probably have More power, the US epa regs are tougher than they are in japan

pictures anyone? I have no idea about this but, am very curious/interested. Is the steering on the other side?

I don't know about that, for bikes at least the jap models are VERY restricted - down to 90hp tops and 110mph! Tiny little blockoff plates under the intake, restrictor plates in the exhausts, and very lazy tunes put the power way down while keeping the price almost the same(wtf!?). For example, their 600cc bikes put down around 70hp to the ground when the same bike in the US or euro spec puts down around 100-105. They have some crazy auto laws over there. Here is some good OT reading if you think I am exaggerating...check out that hardcore exhaust pipe and throttle body restrictor .

Sad that the place that makes most of the worlds race bikes gets the crappiest crippled versions. I never heard of a Jap spec camaro, but I wouldn't be surprised if it was horribly detuned and speed limited. I think it was lifted already along with the motorcycle limits, but in the past the max hp a car can have from the factory in Japan was like 250 or something lame.

The restrictions were def in effect from 93-97 when these cars were made though.

Believe it or not, in Japan and other overseas countries, the camaro is a highly desired car. Where here a lot of kids want a skyline or g35, the other side of the world wants a camaro....The car has a lot of tradition and a$$ kicking history, so it is coveted. The "JDM" version of the camaro is not much different, lights ect. to pass Japan DOT. As for the engine I would think slightly more hp would be possible, more than less. The problem with the bikes in japan, is that people were killing themselves. And your license is hp restricted to your age. So it does make sense to restrict bikes. As for cars, where else can youo buy a 600+ hp all wheel drive car for cheap???? Only in Japan...

god those are hideous

Nothing a little tuning can't fix...;)

Hi
I just bought a 1999 Camaro, exported from Japan to here in the UK, the Dealer said it was 305 Bhp still, but i don't think he would know, but on the spec sheet it mentions some Jap export modifications, just wondering if anyone knows what they could mean...

CODE: GU2 AXLE,REAR 2.73 RATIO

CODE: NA3 EMISSION SYSTEM JAPAN

CODE K71 EMISSION CONTROL LABEL JAPAN

Thanks

litch2004 Oct 6, 2009 03:51 PM

it means that it has the smaller gears offered from GM which were highway gears. The others were emissions deletions because japan doesn't have an EPA but after 50000 miles on a car in japan they total them out. If they don't total them out then you have to pay a very high tax to keep the car. This is why many pepple in the US buy the JDM cars cheap because they are totaled over there. Hope this helps.

Richuk Oct 6, 2009 03:59 PM

Thanks for that, But whats an EPA? Maybe we call it something different here in the UK, And does that mean mine would have the same power as the US ones?
Thanks

ss.slp.ls1 Oct 6, 2009 04:01 PM

Also the 305 bhp is "rated" horsepower...and we all know that the Fbody's were underrated. The actual engine horsepower is ~345 hp.

EDIT: You should have the same power as the US ones, unless they were detuned, nothing a tune can't fix though...

Richuk Oct 6, 2009 04:03 PM

Do lot of the Z28's in Us have 2.73 ratio?

litch2004 Oct 6, 2009 04:04 PM

EPA stands for Environmental Protection Agency

Just depends on the option you got with the car. 2.73's and 3.23's were available for automatic cars. All '94-'02 Fbody's with manual transmissions came with 3.42's. I would try to find yourself a good replacement rear end from a M6 car. It will be a big difference, not too expensive either.

Richuk Oct 6, 2009 04:08 PM

I might have to do that, just got the car yesterday, so have a long list of things to do, putting a lm2 on tomorrow, and gettign rid of those awful jap mirrors.

Richuk Oct 6, 2009 04:11 PM

Oh one other thing, whats an M6? must sound like a dumb question on here, But i've never seen another Camaro in London, so not alot of rescources
