Default maf question

Ok I've read alot of post about this and it seems people can unplug there maf and there car will still start. If I unplug my maf my car will not start the motor just turns over. I have to plug the maf back in unhook the battery and let it reset before the car will start again. Why? I have switched mafs out before and still have the maf code. I'm starting to wonder if my computer is bad. Thanks for any advice.

Is this normal? If not what could be making it do this?

Your car will start, just keep trying. It might struggle for a while, but give it some gas and it should start up. If you have a code for the MAF and you swapped in a known good MAF and the code didn't go away, I would suspect a wiring issue.

That is not normal. When I unplug my MAF, it might struggle to start for a second, but it always starts up.

My Impala would start without the MAF plugged up. It wouldn't idle very well but it would crank. I tried a couple of known good MAFs and still had the code with crappy idle. Ended up just going with a speed density tune.

So getting the computer retuned got the maf code to go away and the car to act right? Thanks for your reply

Exactly what code do you have. Don't reprogram anything until you figure out the real problem.
FYI, a speed density tune eliminates the MAF. Only really needed for heavily modded cars. It's more expensive than a regular tune too.

The code only went away because it was turned off with the speed density tune. I just went that route because it was easiest for me.
