Default Help replacing Coil

My coil is bad on my 97 Z28 and I'm thinking about putting a new MSD blaster coil on it. It seems like a lot of people run these, is it better than stock?

I have a haynes manual and it says its just two bolts and comes off. But it looks to be attached to the ICM and a bracket . I'm not sure how all that fits together. I read a page on it awhile back but cant find it anymore. Anyone who has replaced their coil have any information on this?

Thanks,
Chris

I've got the MSD blaster coil on my firebird and it made absolutely no difference in how the car runs versus the stocker. It looks pretty and I haven't had any problems with it though lol. I'd imagine it'd be more beneficial to a heavily modified car that needs a bigger spark.

To install it just unplug the wires and remove the two bolts that hold the ICM and coilpack to the front of the drivers' side head. Then you need a drill, dremel, or something to grind off the soft rivets that hold the coilpack to the ICM. The MSD Blaster coilpack will come with a small set of nuts and bolts to replace the rivets you drilled out for when you mount it to the ICM. Once the new coil is secured to the ICM, just bolt it back on and plug the wires in and youre done.

It also helps to use some washers to space the whole ICM slightly away from the head to reduce the chance of heatsoak when you reinstall it. Electricity doesn't like heat. I think shbox has a write-up on how to easily space it out on his website. http://shbox.com

I solely bought the MSD coil because it looks cool.

I did use 1/2" thick spare tube from a lift kit for the space to separate it from the head. Been running it for almost 7 months and its still going strong.

Thanks a lot guys for the instructions! Any other opinions or reviews on the MSD vs. stock coil would be great.

For a 96 or 97, the MSD won't be much (if any) improvement from stock. Stock coils on these were pretty good. Of course, it will be an improvement over a bad coil.
