Default cam rust

Here's a pic of my cam that got damaged from being installed in a car with no intake and sitting for at least two years in a tow yard. I spoke with a well respected cam man and he is going to attempt to clean it up and make it usable. Any thoughts or advice. Thanks jeff

As long as the rust is superficial and has not pitted at all, I would be comfortable using it. But if there is ANY pitting whatsoever, that cam is toast.

Not necessarily. A machine shop may be able to polish the lobes with no undue harm.
After looking at the pics I would rather take it to a shop and see what they can do.

Just polish it just like a crank, does not look too bad, have seen worse and they ran fine

Yeah he mentioned me trying to clean it, but i'd much rather have a professional look at it. Just happens to be the guy who originally ground it. So I definetely trust his judgement. Thanks Jeff

Funny I thought about chucking it up in my buddies crank grinder and trying to polish it.

Hard to tell, but you can get some 00 steel wool and try to polish it. It also depends on where it's at, lobes and journals can be treated differently.

Even though I oiled it, Mine was like that from sitting over 3 years. I just sanded it with 1000 grit and tossed it in. That doesnt look too bad.

It had assembly lube on it only those four lobes are like that. Four others have tiny specs and none of the journels are damaged at all. Thanks for all your replies

What I meant was after it had been cleaned. It'd be down right silly to toss that in as-is.

Even the pitting can be polished out as long as it's not too deep.
