Lt1 smokes on takeoff from an idle

I'm thinking it's my rings, but haven't done a compression test. It's a 97 ws6 formula with 175,000 miles. Runs pretty good, doesn't smoke on start up, but after it's warm and sitting at idle(stoplight,etc) it puts a nice puff out when i take off. I have another LT1 i'm building to replace this one, but this one will need to be overhauled too as it's going in my 89 TA once i'm done with the 97. Any ideas?

Sounds like you've answered your own question. Have a compression test done.

Usually when it does that it is either valve seals or valve guides. Pop the valve covers and take a look at the seals.

my friend has the same issue (ls1 tho) so lets say its the seals or whatever...what exactly causes this to happen? randomly or poor mantainance only has 44k miles

sounds like valve guides... its usually due to just being old and getting dry, rubber weathers somethin fierce. Could be rings, try a comp test anyway, couldnt hurt
