Question Computer problems

I have a 95 camaro that had the smaller v6 in it. I bought a lt1 complete w/ tranny, computer, wiring ... everything. I put everything in (yes i had to modify the motor mounts) and it appears to be wired correctly per gm's service manual. My problem is I am getting a check engine light and when i try to get a reading from the obd port the tech 1 tool won't read. I have tried several different tools and none of them will read. I know that the port is an obdII style port yet the computer for 95 is still obdI (yes the engine came out of a 95 z28. The car runs however it runs rough, with poor throtle response. I suspect the optispark however I would really like to get a reading from the computer first. I have checked the wires from the computer to the obd port to make sure they are correct. Does anybody know of any other differences between the v6 and v8 setup that i might have missed?

Please help!!

Do you have the GM manual?
There are diagnostics for no response/running in fail safe.
Check the wiring at the ALDL connector direct, power, ground, & serial data = S/B around 5 volts.
