I think that is the part number for an LT4 starter, if so it bolts right in. Though wow have they gone up in price. I think I paid $150ish about 4 years ago. Found the part at Auto Zone a year or so ago for around $110 a few years back with a lifetime warranty. I work as a mechanic and never have issues with their gold line of starters. Part number 17124. Just called and my price is still $111. IF you have a hookup there you could probably get it for that, if not just a little more as a walk in customer. Not a whole lot of mark up for starters.

You still may have to shim it for proper gear engagement...I run an LT4 type starter and had to shim mine...every car is different, but I recommend that style of starter...

where do the shims have to be placed? between the starter bolts where it meets up with the block?

Just ask for a starter for a 1996 Corvette Grand Sport, or order part number 10455709 from a GM dealer (or GMPD).

This is just a curious question but why doesn't the lt4 starter have that cone that the lt1 does?

Its my understanding the the LT4 style is a factory gear reduction style designed for the LT4 motor...

We use gear reduction starters. Those closed nosed starters SUCK AND THE NOSES HAVE A BAD HABIT OF BREAKING OFF. The one in the photo is typical. The gear rebuction has no nose and a free floating outer pinion. Sometimes the trany and bell must come off to retrive the nose piece TOM
