Its the rockers not openening or closeing the valves causing the fuel to load up in the cylinder causing the back fire. Could also be a lean tip in condition in your tune or possibly a bad MAF. My guess is the rockers were set wrong.

When my rockers were set wrong, the car would spit flames from the intake and barley run.

Finally resolved and regained back its long lost power. After taking on and off the opti about 4 times I realized that I was dead on every time. I know my eyes are bad but no way I was not installing it right. Turns out that we had a wire crossed that was causing the backfire from the intake. So we fixed that and the bent pushrod and celebrated w/ a good pizza dinner once we heard that cam kicking again. 355 503 just sounds so sexy. Thanks all ya for you help.
