water pump
Is the play in the shaft coming out of the timing cover or in the adapter that slides over the shaft and connects it to the water pump? If it is in the shaft, it has most likely wore the bore in the timing cover out (it is a tight tolerance fit). The shaft is called: water pump drive shaft. It has a bearing on the end that is pressed on it and fits in the block. The timing cover and timing set will have to be removed to access this assembly.
If it is in the adapter, there is an o-ring that fits on the driveshaft that helps reduce this movement.
