Quick question about 93 oil cooler

Default Quick question about 93 oil cooler

Now i know this has been beaten to death but this is a different question. Now with my car (as well as other 93's) There is a coolant line running from the water pump to the oil filter adapter then back to the lower section of the radiator. My question is can i just eliminate this and just run a line straight from the water pump to the radiator and leave the adapter in place. Considering that there is only water running through this and not running oil to a cooler? I am just trying to get away with having to by an adapter without the cooler.

I don't see that it would hurt anything. All you're doing is bypassing the cooler, just like if the heater core were leaking......you should be fine with no issues aside from slightly elevated oil temperature....which very many people have done.

okay good. I think think i would have the problem. My car already has been tuned fpr the 160* thermostat as well as having the SLP fan switch so i doubt that the motor will be getting that hot anyways. I just didnt see the point of getting an adapter w/o the cooler. There really isnt any big reason for removing this other than it is 17 years old and it is just one less thing that i have to worry about failing. Thanks for the reassurance of my assumption.

thats what i did, thats what i was told to do and it has worked just fine. run the line from the wp to the lower radiator

You should be able to completely remove the oil cooler if you want to. It might give you some room to run a larger oil filter. A lot of people just plug those ports in the water pump & radiator. I bought the bypass hose when I removed my oil cooler.

Go ahead and take the whole cooler off. There is already an adapter in the block that the filter will screw right into, once you replace the bolts with ones with shorter heads.

Every f-body LT1 that came without an oil cooler has a bypass hose running from the radiator to the water pump.

I actually used a frost plug on the line that comes off the pump. I pulled the line out and installed the plug. As for the radiater i used about 2" of the original hose and a plug with a hose clamp. It workes very well.

The oil cooler can simply be taken off and the studs on the bolt heads behind it can be cut off and smoothed, thats what i did too.

you cut them up to the nut or took the nut off as well?

I took them off, cut the stud off just before the bolt head, cleaned them up on the grinder, wire wheel, and then the buffing wheel. I then cleaned them in the parts washer, and re-installed them. It's not a nut, its a bolt with an extra length to keep the cooler from twisting, when you get it apart you'll understand

I understand. Its almost like the factory studs that held on the extra upper brackets for the alternator.

I cant picture what you referring to, but it sounds like you get it anyway lol. Ya it took me a minut, but i realized that with the studs cut off, you then just use the later model lt1 oil filter too. It's an hp2002 if you want a k&n filter. I always use valvoline full synthetic and a k&n filter. The guy who had the car before me used a fram. But when i had the engine out and tore down i was surprised to see that it literally had not a spec of sludge in it at all. The lifter valley looked brand new lol. Wich makes me feel better about going to a cc306 and a dyno tune this summer.

The bolts are just a common 5/16-18, I just took one to a good hardware store and got small head replacements. Cost under a dollar. Much easier than cutting them up IMO.
