79 trans am/ t56 question

ok so i have a 79 trans am with a 72 pontiac 400 in it.. i want to back it up with a bg t56 that im buying..
now i know ill need a bellhousing made, but my question is i have a spec 3+ and a spec flywheel for the trans.. i need to have a custom flywheel made for the motor dont i? or do you think my spec fw will work?
anybody who could help would be awesome

I was going to do the same and try and back up a t56 to a 76 pontiac 455. IIRC you had to buy a custom bellhousing to mate the two together aswell as a flywheel clutch combo. You can contact the folks over at McCloud which have everything to get it work properly but will be costly. You are also going to have to modify the tunnel and resort to making your own shifter stick. The 4spd console will stay i just think it needs to be moved around to make sure you can get into all gears.

It's not about the capacity, it's about having two overdrive gears to allow a decent rear-end gear while maintaining decent gas mileage. I'm thinking of putting a T56 in mine because I love to cruise with the 2.56 gears, but I really want a better performance gear. Solution: T56 with 3.42 gears out back. Perfect combo.
