I was going to do the same and try and back up a t56 to a 76 pontiac 455. IIRC you had to buy a custom bellhousing to mate the two together aswell as a flywheel clutch combo. You can contact the folks over at McCloud which have everything to get it work properly but will be costly. You are also going to have to modify the tunnel and resort to making your own shifter stick. The 4spd console will stay i just think it needs to be moved around to make sure you can get into all gears.

I'll just put a Muncie m21 in it lol. I'm not going through all that hassle for 2 extra gears. I also think that muncie will hold up a lot better with the torque of the Pontiac motor anyways.

Thanks for that info though.

It's not about the capacity, it's about having two overdrive gears to allow a decent rear-end gear while maintaining decent gas mileage. I'm thinking of putting a T56 in mine because I love to cruise with the 2.56 gears, but I really want a better performance gear. Solution: T56 with 3.42 gears out back. Perfect combo.
