Default some 383 questions

Hey guys I have some 383 questions. Since my 137 mile rebuilt lt1 decided to spin a rod or main bearing for the second time. I'm looking at some options. Anyways a guy on a local forum has a lt1 block with a cast 383 crank. I think its a eagle crank. It also has eagle sir 5.7 inch connecting rods and some speedpro pistons. The kicker is it has spun main bearing. The guy used over sized main bearing on the crank. He is asking $600 bucks for the whole setup. He says it looks like you could polish the crank or turn it. The setup has about 1k miles on it. For heads I have a set of 561 that are milled down some with crane springs. I was thinking of selling the hotcam and buying another cam. The car is trying to go back to daily driver status. Also its an external balanced engine so how would we balance that since I know lt1 crank hubs have no keys. So would this be worth picking up?

Why buy someone elses problems. If you don't know that much about what to look for in the parts to see if anything is usable, then for get it. Take an engine builder with you or just go start from scratch and have a botom end built for you. A 355 with a good set of heads would make a nice DD.

If you want that 383 it would be worth having him take it to a shop to make sure it can be fixed.

Yeah there is a chance that spun bearing could have damaged the crank bad enough that it may not be usable. I would suggest having it checked, talk to the machine shop urself or dont buy.

You have the right idea tho, just have to watch out some people will sell anything.

I wouldnt take the chance with a cast eagle crank unless you are looking for low power >350whp. Have heard alot of failure stories about them. IMO hold out for a good forged crank.

Yeah have a machine shop check it out for sure. And Ditch that hot cam! I'm sure you can have something ground to better suite your set up

well after checking that out im not going with it. Found a used 94 motor local for sale. Going to buy that and swap everything. The hotcam is not bad for a mild street car. If I had done it again I would have gone a completely different route. Mainly the route of a cc503.

its looking like we are going to stay with what we have for now, found a 94 lt1 engine locally for 850 with 84k, we are going to go look at it tomorrow, if it looks good we are going to swap a few things around and put it in, at this point i am tired of him stealing my z28 for work

Sounds like the original setup you were looking at is definitely more of a mess than you should want to deal with.
It's too bad you're so far away from me, I have a good block and forged eagle crank for 396CI for $600.
