Default I have a question

This is my first post on this forum and I am wondering what you guys think of this trade? I have a 79 Chevy K5 Blazer 4wd runs great but the trans is out, A guy wants to trade me his 93 Z28 for it and from what he has said the opti needs replaced. Do you guys think it's a decent deal?

If you need pics to make an informed decision, I will try and get them soon. The Blazer is a typical K5 with typical rust, and from what I can tell from his description and the pics he has given me the Z appears to be a typical unmodified car (i.e. normal wear and tear plus some cosmetic damage but nothing to major).

Lemme get this straight. He wants to give you a nice unmolested stock 93Z that needs a $300 part to run, in trade for an old beat-up 70s Blazer?

Assuming this guy is right about the Opti, that would be a sweet deal. If he's wrong about the Opti, maybe not so much. What confidence do you have in his ability to troubleshoot?

You see guys on this forum take the shotgun approach all the time, where they just throw parts at the car in the hope that something sticks and fixes their problem. Opti's are included in this quite often when they weren't the culprit.

Have you been able to listen to it to see what it is doing yet?? Does it start and just run like crap? Does it not start? Will he let you look at it and do a couple tests?

If so, test spark...hold a plug wire to the manifold to see if it arcs while a buddy turns the key on...test fuel pressure if you can...Regardless, you can find the parts to get it going fairly cheap, OR take the oppritunity to rebuild it and have yourself a nice fast Camaro! lol

He said it runs fine, then starts to miss once it gets warmed up. So i'm guessing the opti based on 3 friends who own or have owned LT1 cars and what little I have read so far.

Are the 93s a decent car?

Here is what I will be trading him.....

That doesnt sound like opti. When mine started missing like that it was a spark plug wire that had grounded out on my header. It never did it until it was warm, but once it was it was a noticable miss. If that is the case it should be popping a code for a misfire. Have the code read (free at any auto parts store) and see what it is. If it is just 1 cylinder os a couple of definate cylinders missing, then its not the opti. If it reads "Random Multi-Cylinder Misfire" then it may be the opti! The problem definately sounds like ignition which the most expensive piece will be the opti. If I were you, get it, replace the opti, plugs, wires, and maybe even the coil (the coils arent expensive at all) and you should be good to go! But check the code first. Is the check engine light even on?

I will check all that out if I get the car, I haven't heard from him in a couple days. Going to call him tomorrow afternoon to see what's up.

I had a 79 K10 TH350 NP203, and seeing how rust free your K5 looks vs a 93 (speed density) bad opti Z, Id say its a decent trade. Its all about what you prefer or what you want at the time. That K5 looks sick, and to some people it would be worth alot of money, to others, nothing. Same goes with 93-97 F bodys. Ill assume your 79 is a TH350 NP203 case, the 203 sucks *** for gas mileage since its a full time case, but TH350s are a dime a dozen. The car is probably worth 2gs, the truck is probably worth 2gs, both need about $300 worth of work. If your tired of the K5, go for the Z, its an even deal if you ask me.

I had that stumble after warm up issue. Solved by replacing the ICM.

Well, last I had heard he was still wanting to trade but was looking for a way to haul the Blazer back home. This was last saturday, and I haven't heard anything since. I am going to try and contact him again, but I don't see this as working out but who knows.
