Default MAF problem

Yesterday my check engine light came on and when I scanned it it said maf failure. Okay so I took it off and cleaned it since it was dirty, still on. I then unplugged it and cleaned the connectors and went away. Started the car this morning to go to work and it came on again. The car runs just like it did when I first got, it idles good. Now I have tried starting the car withthe maf unplugged so I know what it's like when it would fail. Any ideas as to what could be going on? I also noticed while the car is running and I play with tue maf harness that it would stumble and almost die but when I stop itgoes back to normal, could be a break in the wires?

If you start the car with the MAF unplugged, (assuming everything else is mechanically sound) it will run fine. It will simply be running in a 'limp mode' where the CEL will be on and the fans will run full time. If it doesn't run well with the MAF unplugged, you have other underlying issues somewhere.

If moving/touching the harness that plugs into the MAF Sensor causes the problems to be intermittent, I would suggest taking the loom/harness apart and investigating the wires to the MAF Sensor. It is very possible you have some corroded or cracked wires. You could also have something loose in the Male/Female connectors of the MAF Sensor.

Descreened maf? That wire inside is very sensitive. Stocker maf should not be too expensive to find used.

You can get almost any pigtail needed online on a website I have saved on my laptop. When I get off work I can sent it to you. I ordered like 5 pigtails for different sensors on my lt1 for less that $30. That was ably $100 cheaper than factory. Not to mention they already have the correct color code so it makes for a fairly easy job.

Alright I'm pretty sure it's a cracked wire since right where the red wire goes into male connectors there are some pretty crazy kinks. I will try stopping by kragens today and see if they have the male connector. Need to lengthen it a bit anyways.

I don't think you can get pigtails at Kragen/O'Reilly.

Was able to order a connector through kragens. It's going to be a hit or miss since they where unsure as to what one it is. So I will pick it up after work and hopefully it's the right one. Now let's say it is my MAF is it worth it to just spend the money for a bigger aftermarket one or just pickup a new acdelco one. I know I have heard problems with some but I have also read about using the zo6 or truck one or is that an ls1 only thing?

Also forgot to mention was yesterday after I got off work started the car up and the light was off, drove it all the way home and still no light. This morning started the car still no light, decided to drive it to work. I got all the way to the last stop light and as I was sitting at the light it the car dies but it started right up with no problem but now the lights on. When the car goes into "limp mode" does it shut down? I could tell of the fans was on because of that or because it was up to temp. Unfortunally the car is tuned for the fans to come on sooner since I had a 160 deg tstat and now there's a 180 in it.

Got the new plug in and it was the right one, wired everything up and so far no light. Took the old plug apart and there was no break in the wires when i took the plastic shrouding off. Hopefully it was still the plug.

I thought I read somewhere that the ls1 mad was different and the zo6 and trucks needed the computer tuned in order for it to work. But changing the pigtail seemed to fix the problem for now and I don't make anywhere close to enough power to need a bigger so I shall stick to stock. Thanks for the reply though

LS1 and LT1 MAF's are in fact the same and interchangeable. Yes I would have the computer recalibrated after switching to a 85mm Delphi MAF.

This place sells lots of plugs and pigtails. I know you have yours, but just as a general FYI:
