Default Is this cam too small for my build?

I'm in the middle of having a 383 stroker built at a good shop in town. The builder suggested a cam to me the other day, and it seems a bit small (but I'm VERY VERY new to all this), so I thought I'd post the numbers up and ask about it. It's an Isky cam.

Intake/Exhaust @ 50 = 234/246. LC 110

Thanks for any input,

Amanda

A lot depends on how you plan to use the engine. For a DD that's plenty of cam. Much more than that and you'll probably enter into low vacuum issues, raunchy idle (which you may or may not want), need for gears and converter, moving the power band UP, etc.

Since cams are often measured in 6 degree increments (to go from on size to the next) your next step up would be 240/252 @ .050".

Be reminded, far too many over cam their engines. The thinking being "bigger is better", which often isn't the case.

The car currently has 4.10 gears and I have a 3600 stall sitting on the shelf waiting to go in when we put the engine back in. The car does get driven on the street, but it's at the track every weekend as well, and I'm looking to pull as much outta this motor as I can.

That sounds about right for a mild 383. Good split too. Although that LSA is going to be choppy and rough.

I dont know the lobes or the application that your building for other than a 383ci. Maybe you can elaborate on the setup?

If you just are basing this merely off size than a 234/246 on a 110lsa is big enough for a stock PCM car.

Spec'ing a cam shouldnt just be about big numbers either, they should be done for setups. Bigger is not always better. I have a 242/248 on 115lsa in my 398ci.

kinda depends on how much overlap you can live with on the street driving part of it. the 3600 stall is going to be a limiting factor for getting the most out of it

That is strikingly similar to the cam in my 383, except mine is on a 108 lobe.

Great cam - ran it in my 383 for a while, and made 430whp with it.
