Default pinion nut

What size is the nut on the pinion gear? i looked it up on another site and came up with 1 1/4. im on vacation but had to run to sears to grab a tool to fix my ski and grabbed a 1 1/4 socket and it just doesn't look big enough.

Most of my experience is with the 8.5" axle and I have found stock nuts to be 1 1/4" but some aftermarket to be 1 5/16", the two 7.5" I worked on both had 1 1/4" but I see 1 5/16" aftermarket being possible

They are, but you didn't say what the car was or if it still had the stock rear.
