spark plug gap?

Default spark plug gap?

my buddy bought a camaro with a high compression 383 (we think 12.3 to 1) and he had an msd digital 6 box on it. it also came with papers and msd recomends a .040-.050 gap on the plugs for best performance. now when i pulled his plugs and checked gap it was at .026- .028. so my question is, what ill effects did the tight gap have on performance and posible damage?

No damage lol. I would run around .035 in that application especially if he ever plans on spraying.

ok thats good to hear, would it be safer to run .045 n/a and tighten them to .035 if hes spraying? or just run it a .035 all the time?

What plugs are you running? You'll want to run something heat range 6-7 with a gap of about .035-.038. Rule of thumb is on NA you need to close the gap .004 for every 50 HP over stock. One heat range colder than something like a TR55 with compression that high, maybe an additional heat range colder (to 7) than that on nitrous. Heat range 6 is probably fine as long as you're using a recessed tip plug. .026-.028 is probably a little too tight. Ray at nitrous outlet is a good resource for finding a 'close as possible' spec for plug and gap. It depends on how much and how often you spray...

ok, he has the bre7 from ngk if i remember right. he very rarely sprays is, but would like to be able to whenever he needs it. i went ahead and set his gap to about .036 for now. he needs new plugs soon anyway. would you go with the bre7 heat range again?

thanks, also could the plug gap be the cause of his car dying at wide open and high rpms? we havnt got his car back on the road after fixing the plug gap so i was just wondering
