engine light on, can't get a code

I bought a 95 camaro z28 with a lt1 engine. The engine light wasn't on when I bought it, got it inspected and after that it came on.

It has been on ever since, I have checked the fuses and none are bad. I tried scanning the aldl and can't get a reading. Any suggestions?

How are you scanning the ALDL?

timothymiller Jul 10, 2010 07:24 PM

with a Actron Auto Scanner

RamAir95TA Jul 10, 2010 07:28 PM

Do you have the correct version? 95s use an OBDII connector - a hybrid year requiring a special scanner or careful jumping of terminal pins.

well the scanner i bought says it will work for an OBD2 connector but an OBD1 PCM, and thats what I have.

timothymiller Jul 10, 2010 07:47 PM

the scanner says it will read both OBD1 as well as OBD2

Give the model # of the scanner.

timothymiller Jul 11, 2010 08:35 AM

scanner model # is: CP9180

You bought an OBDII scanner. Your car has OBDI. Hope you saved the receipt.

I got another auto scanner. It is a Actron Code Scanner CP9001. Will this work? There are three pins, which ones do I use?

RamAir95TA Jul 11, 2010 06:17 PM

That one won't work either. That is a fancy paperclip, nothing more, used for jumping the pins and flashing the codes on the dash. You can only do that on 93s.

timothymiller Jul 11, 2010 06:18 PM

ok Im stupmed then. What should I get??

RamAir95TA Jul 11, 2010 06:26 PM

Honestly, for us 95s, I think the best thing to do is to pick up an AKM cable (www.akmcables.com) and use some free scanning software (Datamaster, Freescan, etc.). Those programs will tell you far more than your typical code-reader.

timothymiller Jul 11, 2010 06:35 PM

Yea I know what you mean but I have no way of hooking up a laptop/computer to my car. Any other suggestions?

timothymiller Jul 13, 2010 09:57 AM

Is there a certain scanner you would suggest i get? I would love to do it your way but I don't own a laptop to use the scanning software to hook up to the car. I don't have anyone I could borrow one from either.

I just really want to get my car on the road. If anybody has suggestions please let me know!!!

Normally only if it is OBD-II, which his is not.

An Actron CP9145 does OBD-I and II. Many people with 1995s use it.

i dont ever get mine done becuase i have an autoxray ez-5000 but i know for a fact they do both at mine.

timothymiller Jul 30, 2010 02:54 PM

Okay so I spent two weeks trying to get the Super Auto Scanner CP9145. Went everywhere; paid for it at AutoZone, ordered it three times and everytime it got cancelled.

I got a refund and the guy finally decided to tell me that CP9145 was recalled and instead gave me CP9185 which is apparently the replacement for CP9145. I hope it works.
