Default vats or ignition switch?

as soon as i turn the key to run,all electrical power shuts off.dash, starter, headlights ect everything goes dead.it has been doing this on and off for awhile, but now i cant get it to work at all.it will reset itself after a couple minutes and allow the dash lights /dome lights headlights ect to come on,but as soon as i turn the key to run, it shuts off all power.ive bypassed vats with resistors as per shbox's page, and its still doing it.any ideas?

If headlights go out, it's not the ignition switch. Headlights don't run through it. More like a poor connection of a battery cable or bad battery. Check for looseness and/or corrosion.

its a new battery, testing 12.1.volts and the cables are clean, but im looking over the main ground and all the other connections like in the red plastic box thing.car has been sitting. another thing is when i move the column tilt, sometimes it gives a puff of smoke from the column, but it was working fine earlier today.

shbox is right (as always) i didnt notice the part about the headlights. My friends 99z did this when we where getting gas and it turns out it was a loose connection even tho it felt tight

12.1v is not a fully charged battery. 12.6v is.

yeah, my dome light being on all day while i fumbled around under the dash must have drained it a little.it is low, but at least it runs again! any ideas on the mystery smoke from where the column meets the dash area?

no, not really. it just smokes, no burning plastic smell or anything.just a few tiny puffs of smoke, it smells like burning paper or wood more than plastic.while cranking or tilting the column, but sometimes it will do it for a few secs after the engine is running.if i key on and off it stops.is there grease around the key cyl. that could be getting hot?

Probably a chafed wire in the column touching ground. I would pull it all apart and inspect it before something more serious happens.
