Cant get car into park

Cant get car into park Alright i know this isnt the right forum but i have tried the vette forum and other vette forums around and usually noone answers. Im stuck and you guys always come through with the answers.
the car is and 86 vette and i was replacing the shift cable on it the problem is i can go underneath and put the car in park. I start it up and move it through the cars and everything is where it should be. The problem is when trying to put it back into park the car stays in reverse and locks up in reverse which should be park. The cable i replaced it with was the same size and i cant figure out whats going wrong.
